Vamping and Getting Different Sounds on Your Guitar

We received this question today here at Acoustic Music TV:

I have a question ---- is there a way you can show how chord progression applies to vamping for playing back up chords to songs in different keys and maybe give examples or explain how this would work?

As I play the banjo.

Answer
HI, and thank you for your question. I know a little but not that much on vamping. What I tend to do is to find the same chord in a different place on the guitar or mandolin and play that, which are the instruments I play the most, I also use the relative minor chords, those work pretty well also for a different sound.  To play relative minor chords you play the chord that is 3 half steps down from the root of any major chord, this is the relative minor. So for G play Em, think G, F, Em, for C it is Am etc. This is sort of chord substitution but you get the idea. You can mix all this stuff together to create progressions and new sounds.

I also tend to sometimes play the opposite chord to the key that is being played. So if everyone is jamming and playing the G chord part of the song I might play the D chord in the Key of G or the C. This doesn't really work if we are playing the song in order with all the correct chords but does work if we just start jamming on the song, like if you are playing the verse over and over again and people are just trying different things. I switch it up, throw in a different chord in that key.

The other thing I do is play the movable arpeggios scale for the key. I just play little made up patterns. Once you know the scale then you can play any of those notes and it will sound correct. Great for making up a quick solo that isn't the melody of the song and it sounds correct. I have those charts in the Essential Chords for the guitar and mandolin but never made one for the banjo. I should work on that. You might be able to figure out what they are for the tuning you are working in.

Another thing I do is play a lower sounding version of the chord for the verse and then a higher sounding version of the chord for the chorus or to just throw in a different sound. Lets take a G chord, normally I would play it in the 1st position and it would sound fine, but I could also play it up on the 7th fret on the top three strings. It has a much higher sound but it is still a G chord.

hope this helps, great question

Winner for Setting Up Chord Fingering Boxes

Thank you everyone who voted or sent comments on the design for our chord fingering charts for a new book we are working on. It looks like Style A with the root chords is the winner, A total of 42 people voted with 35 going for A. We had a great idea sent in on adding in root and note numbers instead of chord names, so we will be doing that. We love comments, they really help

thank you all

Guitar Power Chord Chart, New NoteBook Music Chord Chart

Our newest pdf Chord Chart, The Guitar Power Chord Chart. We get requests all the time about doing a guitar power chord chart. I started looking around the web at other charts and found them confusing, I also just wasn't that familiar with power chords, so this is our stab at it. I would love your comments on it. This chart is a little different in that it is trying to show how the power chord is played instead of just a chart of positions. Also these are movable chords so it is really one fingering, just moved around. A little like we how we play mandolin two finger chords.

You can get you copy by signing up on the mailing list upper right and it will direct you to the download page. And let me know your comments.

Blank Guitar Sheet Music

Our latest post is a blank guitar sheet for writing music. I often found that the lines on the blank sheet music I could find on the web were just to close together. I always wanted a little more room. So that is what we did, expanded it out a little. Just sign up over in the right hand corner and download our pdf blank guitar sheet music. This sheet also works for piano music as well.

PDF Chart for all the Guitar Barre Chords

To make carrying the Barre chord chart a little easier we combined the 5th and 6th string chords into one chart. This gives you all the essential positions for these movable chords. By using both positions you can stay in one basic position on the fret board and look cool at the same time. Also start experimenting with taking a few fingers off the strings for a rougher sound or just use the top three strings and start thinking about triads. Download over on the right.

Movable Soloing Scale for Folk or Country Music, Any Key

This chart shows a Major Movable Soloing Scale for Folk or Country Music for any key. Great for playing soloing notes over a song while someone else is playing or you can use it to add accent notes to your own playing.

This pattern is used for playing guitar solos for folk and country songs. It is a movable pattern because all of the strings are closed and it can be used for any key. Starting on the 6th string locate the note that matches the key you are playing in. You can now play this pattern or parts of it over any of the chords of the key and it should sound pretty good, i.e. key of C starts on the C note at the 8th fret on the 6th string, key of A would start at the 5th fret. For the key of G some of the notes use the guitar nut or are open strings.

I find that the higher notes on strings 1 and 2 stand out better because of the pitch but all of them work.

PDF of Guitar Barre Chords on the 6th String

Above is our guitar Barre Chord chart for root notes on the 6th string. The 6th string Barre Chords may be a more common but the advantage of knowing both 5th and 6th is that you don't have to move your hand around as much, the chords for each key are all right there.

Let say you are playing the blues in A. You can put on a Barre Chord at the 5th fret of the E string. The IV chord or the D chord is just below it on the 5th string , just move down one string to the D string 5th fret and you are in a D chord. The fingering is a little different, check out the 5th String Chart. Slide the hand up the fret board 2 frets to the E note and you have the 5th or V chord or E chord. The blues, I, IV, V or A, D and E, make your 7ths and you have the blues.

If you are a beginner I would check out this book from Amazon, it got a lot of great reviews. Guitar for the Absolute Beginner, Book 1 (Book and DVD) (Amazon affiliate link)

PDF of Guitar Barre Chords on the 5th String

"Barre chords (also known as barré chords and bar chords, but more commonly spelled as "barre") are a type of guitar chord where one or more fingers are used to press down multiple strings across the guitar fingerboard (like a bar pressing down the strings). Barring the strings enables the guitarist to play a chord not restricted by the tones of the guitar's open strings. Barre chords are often referred to as "moveable" chords, as they can be moved up and down the neck as needed. They are commonly used in most popular and classical music and are frequently used in combination with "open" or standard guitar chords. They are typically used for more complex chord voicings and playing in keys not suitable for the more basic open chords of the first position of a standard-tuned guitar." Wikipedia

As you move along the path of learning guitar you will need to learn Barre Chords. They open up your music and let you play many different variations of a great many chords. You will be able to add different voicings and effects to your playing. You will learn to play a full barre or partials like triads and such. They also allow you to move up the neck so you can look cool. They are essential to fuller more richer playing. We have two Barre Chord charts, this one is for chords based on the root notes on the 5th string, and we will shortly put a chart for root notes on the 6th string.

Be sure to check out our sampler charts, just sign up in the upper right hand corner of the site.
