Mandolin Photo Chord Book, Initial Design Concept

Thanks everyone who made comments and voted on my mandolin chord pictures, Photo A's view was the clear winner but there was also a strong vote for using both photos in the book. Above is an image with my first pass for the page design of the new chord photo book. I would love any comments on it good or bad. I will reshoot the photos but they will be along this line.
The thought is to include a variety of ways to show chords, pictures, fret board, chord box, staff lines and TAB lines.  FPO means for position only, I don't have that image at the moment but that is where one would go.

Why is the Mandolin Such a Hard Instrument to Play?

Why is the Mandolin Such a Hard Instrument to Play?
I saw this headline fly by today on a blog about playing the mandolin. I never thought of it that way, in fact I think it is one of the easier string instrument to play. Especially if you just use the two finger chords. You only have to know three basic finger positions and you can play any song by just moving your hand up or down the fret board.

The mandolin doesn't have a 5th string tuned lower that caused all of the different fingerings. The strings are all tuned the same so the fingerings work anywhere on the fret board. You can use one of the three finger positions illustrated below to play a major, minor or 7th chord. Then just sliding up or down the fret board you can play different chords. Each fret is 1/2 step, so depending on the key you are in you only have to move up or down 1 or 2 frets to the next chord.

If you are on the bottom two strings you get low sounding chords, excellent for verses. If you are on the upper two strings you get higher sounding chords, excellent for the chorus. Playing this way gives you some nice dynamics without having to know a lot.

2 Finger Movable Chord I, IV, V Progression Chart

Using our 2 Finger Mandolin Progression Chart you can play the basic I, IV, V Chord progression in any key with Major, Minor and the 7th Chord. Simple to figure out and use. This chart also shows you how the progressions fit together. This allows you to mix and match and give your music color and life. You just need to identify the root chord for the key on the fret board and you can move up or down. Each chord can be found in several places.

On a personal note, thank you for all the kind messages and notes we have been getting from blog viewers about our charts, they are very nice. I have worked on figuring these charts out starting 10 years when I started learning Guitar and then moved to Mandolin with a side trip to Ukulele. I have put a real push on the the last years and then a big push in the last two months to get them finished. With a big thanks to my friend Bo who suggested "hey how about adding color to make them better". So thank you all and I have a few more coming, but at the moment I am working on filling in the download pages with some of my favorite products.

2 Finger Mandolin Chord Chart

Our second of our 4 Mandolin charts, the 2 Finger Mandolin Chord Chart. The two finger mandolin chart contains the Major, Minor and 7th Chords, plus a fret board chart. Also included are several alternative fingerings for G, Gm, G7, Em and D. Sign up for a free major chord sampler over on the right.

I play the two finger chords most of the time, and what is great about them is that there are easy to find from the several to chose from on the mandolin. (I should do a video on this) The different voices, high and low, are great for getting different colorings for between the verses and choruses. To get your free pdf mandolin chord charts just fill in the sign up form on the right. Plus we are also now offering a printed cover stock, 3 hole punch version.
